Jose Garcia Villa Essay Example for Free

Jose Garcia Villa Essay â€Å"When you are old and beautiful, And things most difficult are done, There will be few who can recall Your face as it is ravaged now By youth and its oppressive choice.† -At Majority Punched. The many memorabilia and personal trinkets of one of the most famous writers in Philippine literature surprisingly epitomized the exact contradictory, or some will say the exact sentiment, of the lines of the beautiful poem above. The personal touch of the displays in the 2nd floor gallery brought an intimate ambience to the whole exhibit, and it brought to light another aspect of a renowned writer apart from his professional excellence. Jose Garcia Villa is one of the most eminent Filipino writers of all times, and the Rizal Library and the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies collaborated to bring to the Ateneo de Manila University a collection of Villa’s books and papers from his own personal library. Hung on the walls were frames relating Villa’s biography. From his childhood through his foreign stints to his success, the story was completely divulged to the visitors. There was also a timeline of the writer’s personal and professional milestones. Personal letters from EE Cummings, Nick Joaquin, and some of his other idols and friends in the literature field were also there. Villa supposedly decided to be a writer after he had read Cumming’s works, and Villa’s personal favorite from Cumming’s work was exhibited. Sherwood Anderson was also one of his influences. It was also fascinating to read his very first poem about love. Dated on 1925, his handwriting and writing style was simplistic yet elegant since then. There was also a poem for Marky Mark or Mark Wahlberg, discussing his very attractive physique. Copies of hardbound editions of his poem collections, trial publication designs, and several original old print of his works were displayed. There were also special editions of his works such as 55 Poems with his own signature and a handsome-boxed edition which is now a collector’s item. It was also said that his first love was drawing, and frames of his own old personal drawings were hung. There were also pictures of him from his youth to his old age. There was one picture of him with Manuel Arguilla, a friend he hangs out with when in Manila, which especially haunted me. His typewriter was also showcased in the exhibit. I was also impressed to find out that Villa is only the second Filipino to be published by Penguin; the first was national hero, Rizal. He was really larger than life. I was particularly taken by one of the poem displayed, At Majority. For me, it immortalizes into words how the Filipinos and his readers will now remember Villa- a beautiful sliver of words and poetry, a figure larger than words, deeper than his writings, and even more beautiful and remembered even in his death.

Crime and Punishment :: essays research papers

Crime and Punishment   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Injustice is defined as an unjust act; or wrongdoing. Poverty, illness, and death are all considered acts of injustice. Crime and Punishment written by Fyodor Dostoevsky examines all these areas of life. Death is the greatest injustice, especially when it comes by murder. In the novel two murders occur and the man that commits these acts of injustice believes that he had every right to do it. Though he is punished for his actions the time that he has to spend in prison is not comparable to the time that he has taken away from the women. Although his social punishment does not fit his crime, the mental punishment that he puts himself through makes up for societies lack of punishment.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Raskolnikov who is a poor student commits these murders as a way to obtain money. He convinces himself that it is okay to murder the woman because she is an old lady who doesn’t seem to share her wealth. The fact that her sister had to be killed because she wa lked in at the wrong time shows just how unjust the murder was in the first place. Raskolnikov wrote an article while in school, the article argues that certain men are above the general rules of humanity, thus they have a right to commit murder. These ideas are what he used to justify his killings.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Once Raskolnikov confessed to the murders he was put on trial. At the trial many of his friends and family testified that he really was a good human being. They gave examples of his good deeds towards the community, such as saving young children from a burning fire. Even though he was poor, he gave his money to others in their time of need. The police officer that suspected him all along even lied and said that Raskolnikov confessed on his own and was never suspected. Psychologists testified that he was not physically or mentally healthy at the time of the murder. All of these actions contributed to his sentence being very minimal. He received eight years of hard labor in Siberia. During this time he was allowed to see the girl that he loved everyday. His prison sentence did not meet the severity of punishment that he felt was needed for the women’s murders.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The mental punishment that Raskolnikov put himself through was harsher than any social punishment could ever be.

Maus vs. Animal Farm

The most annoying thing Is when parents do not control their children in public. If their child Is mucking around and doing something reckless, parents need to step In and take action. In today's society, parents are too focused on their phones, Pad and gadgets to pay enough attention. Therefore, leaving their kids to run muck. Children need discipline. If parents cannot control their own children, why do they even bother taking them out in public? Parents have to learn that it is not okay to let a hill run around a store and disrupt others. If the parents paid more attention, they would notice what kind of child they have brought into this world – a monster! It makes no sense for a mother or father to sit on their phone in a restaurant meanwhile crazy corrupt children are creating chaos. Touching, hitting, and knocking everything in sight. How does a parent not notice this? Their child could possibly damage a priceless artifact and it would not even become an immense deal unle ss someone pointed it out. When will it become apparent that children need discipline? Many children Just don't listen to their parents as a result, children need discipline. Furthermore, they are young, they are foolish and they are definitely not experienced enough to know what Is right or wrong. It Is a parent's Job to teach their chide the right and wrong thing to do In a situation. If a child Is not telephoned from a young age, It is a lot harder to instill discipline when they are older. Starting from a young age, discipline can be taught easily gaining the authorities respect therefore; the parent can control their children in public!

Sex Is Not The Only Human Behavior - 3350 Words

In the marketing industry it is widely known that sex sells, however many see sex as an act of deviance. Deviance does not mean that something is necessarily illegal but rather it means that the act strays from normal social behavior. For most people that see sex as a deviant behavior they feel this way because sex does sometimes involve activities that are illegal. The illegal sexual activity that I will be focusing on in this research paper will be prostitution. Sex is not the only human behavior that can be seen has deviant, there are many other activities such as alcohol/drug abuse, violence, and even mental disorders that may all be categorized as deviant. In the case of a broader and more general definition, a person can be deviant†¦show more content†¦According to the textbook Deviant Behavior, â€Å"the so-called intrinsically deviant characteristics do not come from the behavior itself; they come instead from some people’s minds. To put it simply, an act ap pears deviant only because some people think it so. Deviance, then, is a mental construct (an idea, thought, or image) expressed in the form of a label. Deviance, in other words, is socially constructed, defined as such by society† (Taylor 2013). This means that based on ones beliefs and values definitions of deviant behaviors would change. Everyone has a different opinion on situations and events so therefore one situation may be consider deviant to a person while to another it may be a normal social behavior. The one form of sexual deviance that will be my focal point in this paper is going to be prostitution and a few other sexual deviant activities associated with prostitution. Prostitution has many positive and negative affects on society, depending on the way a person may look at it and analyze it. Prostitution which is the sale of sexual services of oneself or another for money or goods, is defined as a crime and a deviant behavior in the United States. â€Å"Prostitution law varies widely from country to country, and between jurisdictions within a country. Prostitution or sex work is legal in some parts of the world and regarded as a profession, while in other parts it is a crime punishable by death† (ProConorg). Although prostitution is
